THE GUT - YOUR OTHER BRAIN

Alex Kagianaris - All systems in the body are intricately connected, so it's impossible to talk about gut health without discussing the brain and your immune system. Did you know that you have more neurons in your gut that you do in your brain? This collection of neurons is called the enteric nerve system - it's how you get that "gut feeling." Digestion starts in the brain before the food gets to your mouth. At the mere thought of food, you have a physical response - salivating over something that you may believe is tasty or getting nauseous at the thought of liver pate' (I actually love liver pate' but my wife definitely gets a bit nauseous when I mention that I may be making some). the sight and smell of food also elicit the same responses, which are an important first step in getting your digestive juices flowing in preparation for the coming meal.
